Forum 10: King Arthur: Myth or Truth? (by Cecilia Acosta)

Last year we read the text “The Coming of the Saxons, or English 449(?) A.D. The Battles of the Tribes - Britain Becomes England” by D.H. Montgomery. The author depicts King Arthur’s battles in Dorsetshire as something ambiguous. At first, he provides certain expressions such as “The legend,” “According to tradition,” or “it is said.” These phrases give the impression that the author’s believes in the mythical nature of King Arthur. However, at the end of the same paragraph, the author mentions that this British Prince “was not a myth but a man.” So, the point of discussion was: “Did King Arthur really exist? Or this king and his sword “Excalibur” are just part of an ancient legend?” What do you think?

This topic really makes me think about my childhood. As we said in our last class, we have this Arthur image: a hero, taking a sword out of the stone. But, I really don't know if it was real or not.

I agree with Daniela, According to Holliwood movies King Arthur was a very important hero according to the many battles he was suppoused to win with his famous sword...but it seems , according to the text we read in class, that is not true, It makes me think how distorted some legends or myths are distorted in order to exalt national identity??? I don´t know...

I agree with you Jesi, aparently King Arthur is a myth but we can't prove that, maybe the history was changed and that why it's difficult to believe all the things we heard about him.

Personally, I wouldn't conceive the idea of a changing History. Rather, the interpretation of factual past events is what changes. The historian, when s/he writes, is left to add her particular interpretations and this is possibly what makes history changing. What appears to be installed after reading Montgomery is that Arthur was perhaps a myth. It is precisely Montgomery who conceives History as a fabrication. So, Arthur might probably have been a fabrication.
